A Curse and a Blessing

Uncategorized Apr 10, 2020

You are feeling it and so am I. Fear, worry, stress an uncertain future with probably a little relief thrown in that the alarm clock won't need to be set for tomorrow. We've spent several weeks in our home and really don't want to do any of the projects we said we'd do, "If only I had more time."

As awful as this pandemic is, I do believe we can all make choices. We can choose how we wish to see this situation. Please know I have full sympathy, sadness and compassion for those suffering in pain, solitude, grief with loss of lives and income. I don't want you to see me as heartless for talking this way. However living only seeing the negative on television and talking about gloom and doom can really create a negative patter for thinking in our brain.

In this moment you and I might be safe and sound. We may be in bed or on a couch reading this or having the television on nearby as we scroll through the internet. We are okay...for this moment. We have heard it before "This moment is all we have."

I heard an author named SARK once give a lecture on how to look at the bad situations/problems in our lives. We had to fill in the blanks. THIS (situation) is the WORST thing that has ever happened to me because _________________ and it is the BEST thing that has ever happened to me because ____________________.

While I know there are some horrific things that cannot be included in this exercise, a lot of stuff can be used. For me, the death of my dad was the WORST thing that ever happened to me because I loved him so much and the grief was almost unbearable. Add to that the breakup of relationships within my family caused me to sink to the lowest level of darkness I have ever felt. However, it was the BEST thing that ever happened to me as it caused me to research grief and find answers about why people behave the way they do and why I felt like I did. I found the tools to move through it and gained understanding. I became courageous and shared my journey of finding evidence of life after death. Ten years later I have the world's largest afterlife podcast, a book, a Facebook group of over 5000 great people that I can talk to about this stuff, I have held conferences and now doing online courses and have met the BEST FRIENDS I've ever had.

So, welcome to 2020 Covid-19. Although it is a curse to those who have lost lives, lost incomes, suffering intolerably, and so much more...can we find a blessing? Unfortunately many times when we are going through intense pain and grief, you may not see a blessing for years to come. When we look back we can see the chain of events that led us from a bad time to a better time.

Day by day, moment by moment, breath by breath we can change how we think about this situation and CHOOSE BLESSINGS. The more choose blessings, the more we can develop and a neural pathway for positive thoughts to come more automatically. We know how easy it is to think negatively! Today I am with my mom, did not have to wake up to the alarm clock and getting things done that I've had on the back burner for quite some time! We are eating (and drinking) well as the empty bottles of chardonnay are filing the recycle bin! I have time to breathe, day dream, get back in touch with what I want in life. Not many people have a parent til alive but I do. Mom and I have had some great conversations and some laughs.

We can choose "gratitude" when negative thoughts get too strong to bear. Get a piece of paper out and hand write 50 things you are grateful for. You'll notice as you look for things and write them down, you will feel better.

My friend, you are the captain of your ship just as I am. You may have passengers looking to you for strength and hope and comfort. What direction will you steer your ship?
